Thomas Öhler is back on the cover of the site with a new video project! The Austrian, who is a former World Champion and was in the UCI top ten for a long time before concentrating on shows with the support of Red Bull, recently succeeded in an incredible challenge – to complete the 400m hurdles on his bike faster than the best German pro hurdler Georg Fleischhauer (Thomas Öhler’s incredible challenge)!
This time he took on a challenge with his all mountain bike instead, creating a buzz on the MTB scene with this exceptional video and its 20 minutes of breathtaking footage. Thomas sets off on an adventure with Harald Philipp, a well-known rider on the Austrian scene who could be referred to as an ‘alpine biker’, a sort of MTB mountain guide, a professional rider who specialises in the ascent (and the inevitable descent) of the alpine summits. The two riders head out in the footsteps of two MTB pioneers who, in 1972, attempted the descent of the Steinerne Meer, the ‘Sea of Rock’ on Mount Simmerstein, between Saalfelden and Berchtesgaden in Austria. This time however, the descent is successful, resulting in some fantastic footage showing the guys making their way down the mountain, their two styles and differing techniques complementing each other perfectly. Harald seeks out lines, slick rocks and curves, not unlike a skier, while Thomas treats the mountain like a huge section, hopping, leaping and jumping over the rocks. With well-established trials riders such as Thomas, Marco Höesel, Chris Akrigg and Kenny Belaey picking up all mountain bikes with such success, could this mark a new development in the way that mountain bikers ride? We wouldn’t complain if it was!
This edit by Infinite Trails (Sebastian Doerk) has already had over 200,000 views. Amazing.
