This year’s UCI Trials World Championships take place in Quebec, in the hallowed Mountain Bike spot that is Mont Saint-Anne! We remember a certain Bruno Arnold becoming 26” World Champion there in 1998! Tribal Zine is being represented at the biggest event in the UCI trials calendar by Julien Letrouit, one of the founding members of the No.1 trials information site, who now lives in Montreal and is heavily involved in the development of the sport over there (he was one of the main players in the Taz venture, alongside Thibaut Veuillet, who is one of the organisers in Mont Sainte-Anne) Julien will be on hand with several other members of the Tribal staff to bring us everything that happens at the World Championships, as it happens. The Worlds, which promise to be more intense than ever, are being organised by Gestev, a company set up in 1992 by MTB fanatics Patrice Drouin and Chantal Lachanc, who have organised several UCI and snowboard world cups. In March they were at the helm of the Red Bull Crashed Ice, where more than 120,000 spectators went to watch the 64 men and 16 women who took part in the final. The 2010 MTB and Trials World Championships should be pretty good then… Here are a few stats to give you an idea of the scale of the event: 50 countries will be represented by no less than 800 athletes, who will be watched by 350 international journalists and 100,000 spectators!
The Mont Sainte-Anne World Championships were officially opened on Tuesday, with a spectacular opening ceremony outside the Quebec parliament buildings that began at 19:30 and went on for most of the night! Enormous dirt jumps and freeride obstacles had been constructed especially for the occasion and the riders sessioned them hard! Thibaut Veuillet was also on hand to put on a trials demo on his Quark II. This was followed by a parade of all of the different national delegations of riders, accompanied by some impressive projections and light shows, and a concert by Mister Valaire et Slimat, who finished the evening off and welcomed the World Championship in style!
Here are some magnificent photos taken by Michel Roy, of this incredible opening ceremony. Check out his website, Digital Direct Multimédia, to see more of this well known photographer’s work. Michel is a member of the Corporation des Maîtres Photographes du Québec and has had some impressive results in recent competitions. He won first prize in the wildlife category and all of his photos were deemed “excellent”. He also won the popular Snowboard Jamboree photo competition organised by LG in Quebec in February. Thanks for sharing, Michel!
