The Spanish prodigy Ion Areitio (Koxx) put in a great performance on the sections of Mont Sainte-Anne... Having won the Junior 20” world title on Saturday, he took the double on Sunday by taking the win in the Junior 26” final! At the end of the first lap, Cadet World Champion David Bonzon (Atomz) was in the lead, one point ahead of Ion. However, Ion put in an exceptional second lap, conceding just three points, to take his second world title. French rider Maxime Tolu (Atomz) also had an excellent second lap (dropping just three points as well) and finished in second place. Marius Merger (Koxx), bronze medallist in the 20” final, finished in third place in the 26” competition as well, ahead of Spaniard Rafael Tibau (Monty), Frenchmen Valentin Gaucher (Atomz) , Morgan Vassor (Koxx) and British Champion Sam Oliver (Rockman). Four members of the Tribal Team were on hand to bring you their impressions of the action, including Julien “El Pinpino” Letrouit, an active member of the Quebec trials season who was instrumental in the creation of the Taz park in Montréal and one of the founders of Tribal Zine (in 1998, don’t we feel old !) and Sylvain “Sylbegood” Randier, the brother of the webmaster/editor of your website… It’s like a waking dream for them as they watch the extraordinary performances of the greatest riders on the planet on the enormous, original and well-thought-out sections that had been set by the Gestev team.
Our impressions...
This time, the sections were run in reverse. As it had done the day before, the weather changed very quickly and the rain put in an appearance towards the end of the competition, giving the advantage to those who had finished quickly. Those that were still riding were also treated to buffeting winds to make things just that little bit harder!
At the start of play it was obvious that this final was pretty open. Almost everyone was in with a chance and no one could say how it would turn out. The sections passed muster and in contrast to yesterday’s comp, there were few mistakes. This was confirmed by the final scores: the top two riders finished on equal points and third place was just one point behind them! Each dab counted. In spite of the weather and the difficulty of the sections, Ion Areitio managed four cleans on each lap! Swiss rider David Bonzon’s performance was exemplary: the most points he dropped in any of the sections was one!
