The Junior 20" final of the 2010 World Championship in Mont Sainte-Anne saw Ion Areitio, the young Spanish prodigy who astonished us all throughout the whole UCI World Cup season with his impressive performances, crowned Junior 20” World Champion. He took the win after a very close battle with European Champion Raphaël Pils and Frenchman Marius Merger. Four members of the Tribal Team were on hand to bring you their impressions of the action, including Julien “El Pinpino” Letrouit, an active member of the Quebec trials season who was instrumental in the creation of the Taz park in Montréal and one of the founders of Tribal Zine (in 1998, don’t we feel old!) And Sylvain “Sylbegood” Randier, the brother of the webmaster/editor of your website… It’s like a waking dream for them as they watch the extraordinary performances of the greatest riders on the planet on the enormous, original and well-thought-out sections that had been set by the Gestev team.
Our impressions…
The weather was grey and humid, but it wasn’t raining. The zones were set in a circle, in the middle of which the spectators could stand and watch, thus ensuring a spectacle. There are a lot of questions in the air, the Canadian crowd is not used to this sport!
The sections are made of artificial (notably the two sections constructed from the enormous wooden letters of “Quebec” and “Canada”) and imported natural obstacles (tree trunks and rocks). Classic UCI sections, with the focus on the spectacle; nothing like the natural sections of K-124 Days for example.
Morgan Vassor rode valiantly in his first UCI competition and finished in a very respectable 6th place. Marius Merger performed well, but two fives relegated him to the third step of the podium. Almost from the start, the battle for the top spot was between Ion Areitio and Raphaël Pils. Although the German dominated early on in the competition, a five saw him finish in second place.
