The national season came to a close a few weeks ago in Belgium with the final of the Belgian Cup which took place in Kluisbergen. Although the overall rankings were all but set in stone in all categories, 42 riders turned up to rid in this sunny but cold (the perfect conditions for a trial) final round.
In the morning the Promesse, Poussin and Benjamin classes set off on the sections. They had to complete three laps of five sections, with a bit of everything, including technical passages, big moves and long, physical sections. After the riders had walked the sections, a few of them said that it was too easy, but even if there weren’t many big moves for the younger riders, they had to concentrate all the time in order not to make any mistakes. In the end, all of the sections had the right level of difficulty to ensure a good competition and the winners were Will Lecerv in Promesse, Pierre Pauwels in Poussin and Romain Léonard in Benjamin.

At 13:00 it was the turn of the Minime, Cadet, Junior and Elite riders to set off. The sections were very difficult for the Cadet, Junior and Elite classes. In Minime Bastien Grommerch took a well-deserved win. In Cadet Maxime Senden and Dieter Plettinckx fought a tough battler for the top spot on the podium. After two laps Maxime was in the lead with just two points on Diter, but in the end it was Dieter who took the win, pulling back the lead and ending up two points ahead of Maxime! In Junior it was another victory for Pierre-Charles Thomas, who celebrated by locking his car keys in his boot, forcing his father to make the 375 mile round trip to Bastogne to fetch his spares! In Elite it was another new victory for Iciar Van den Bergh, despite breaking a spoke on his first lap. No one had the right size spoke to replace it so he had to ride his next two laps without it. Luckily for him in held up! There was a fierce battle between Wesley Belaey and Rodrique Timelline for second and third place, with Wesley finishing second ahead of Rodrique. In the women’s competition Maurine Sintzen took another win ahead of Perrine Devahive and Aurore Defraitteur. Charlotte Coen finished fourth, but was only riding to defend her second place overall, having broken a finger playing basketball at school.
