After heading to Australia (Canberra) in 2009 and Canada (Mont Sainte-Anne) in 2010 , the World Championships have returned to Europe: This year they will be held in Champéry in Switzerland and next year in Leogang in Austria. After that, it’s off to another continent altogether, as the World Championships hit South Africa! The UCI management committee awarded the organisation of the 2013 MTB and trials World Championsip to the town of Pietermaritzburg, in South Africa. The decision was announced on Friday after the committee meeting in Maastricht. Pietermaritzburg has already played host to two rounds of the UCI MTB World Cup (XC, DH and 4X), once in 2009 and again this year. A third round will be held there in 2012 when Pietermaritzburg opens the new MTB season. The choice of South Africa for the organisation of the World Cups and the World Championships did not happen by chance; it is a land of mountain biking, something of a mecca for mountain bikers form around the world.
Each year, at the end of March, the famous Cape Epic, one of the best-known mountain bike races in the world, takes place, with 1200 racers coming from 54 different countries to take part! South African riders are becoming more and more prevalent on the World Cup circuit as well. Riders like Stander Burry (XC), Greg Minnaar and Andrew Neethling (DH) are all making names for themselves. For trials riders, South Africa has pervaded our consciousness thanks largely to our World Champion Kenny Belaey, who introduced us to this dream location in the two latest episodes of his fantastic show “Kenny Belaey’s Big Time Trial Adventure” on Extreme TV... “It was an exciting trip in a really interesting country. We found some great spots to ride, epic scenery and much more…” The 2013 World Championships should be good then!
Here are some superb, if a little vertiginous, photos of World Champion Kenny Belaey riding above Cape Town, where the 700km Cape Epic race is held! Photos: Red Bull photofiles.
