The curtain has just closed on the 2011 European Championships in Biella and what a fantastic and intense weekend it was, despite the weather! As in2010, the Biella Bike Festival displayed trials in style in the centre of the magnificent city, steeped in history and culture. The six sections were set out around the Piazza Vittorio Veneto and mixed natural obstacles (granite rocks and tree trunks) with artificial elements (concrete pipes, metal barrels and railway sleepers). The rain came along to make things harder for the riders in this first UCI trial of the year, but that didn’t stop them from riding hard and throwing up a few surprises. Before we get started on the report, we have to commend the organisers and their press and communications team for the fantastic job they did all weekend. Thanks especially to Mario Facchini and the whole Newspower team for their availability and cooperation. On Friday, the various national teams of Elite and Junior riders rode in the qualification round to determine the eight best riders who would go on to compete in Saturday’s final. We brought you the results on that very evening, PNG - 323.1 kb and it was Vincent Hermance and Yann Dunant in 26”, and Benito Ros and Raphael Pils in 20” who had dominated the proceedings (The Biella semi-final). Now here are the full results and some great photos from the final of the 2011 European Championships. Click on the links below to check out the official photo galleries form the event.

Karin Moor, 2011 European Champion

JPEG - 707.7 kb The women’s final took place in the morning, competing over three laps of the six sections under the pouring rain. Swiss rider Karin Moor (Koxx) defended her title brilliantly, winning the competition with panache ahead of Australian Janine Jungfels (Koxx) who had been in the lead before a couple of mistakes relegated her to second place. Janine was of course competing out of category in this European competition, but showed that she was a serious contender for the world rounds, which she is training hard for in competitions across Europe. The silver medal, then, went to the very promising German Champion Romina Fix (Atomz), who is just 16 years old. Bronze went to Spaniard Mireia Abant (Monty), who was separated from Czech Tatiana Janickove on most cleans. World Champion Gemma Abant finished just a few points off the podium with a surprising fifth place finish.

Raphaël Pils, 2011 Junior 20" European Champion

The Junior final was run at the same time as the women’s on Saturday morning. After finishing in the lead in the qualifiers the day before, Junior German Champion Raphaël Pils (Monty) also successfully defended his title, dominating the competition and finishing ahead of Italian Alessandro Bertola (Koxx), who picked up a silver medal in front of his home crowd, and Pole Filip Mrugala, who finished third.

Robin Fix, 2011 Junior 26" European Champion 2011

Germany was the country to watch in this year’s Champiosnhips! After taking the Junior 20” title in the morning, the German team went on to shine in the Junior 26” final in the afternoon. Robin Fix (Atomz) put in a remarkable first lap, finishing on just two points. A well-managed second lap saw him take the win. Switzerland’s David Bonzon (Atomz) took silver, finishing just two points behind the winner on eight points. Bronze went to Yann Dunant (TMS) who, despite being in the lead the day before made a few big mistakes in the final. He had a bit of a resurgence on his second lap, dropping just three points and finished on a total of 23 points. Frenchmen Clément Méot and Morgan Vassor both just missed out on the podium, and they were followed by Spain’s Pol Tarres, France’s Léo Nobile and German Rico Baak.

Kenny Belaey, 2011 Elite 26" European Champion

The Elite 26” riders were also competing in the afternoon and it was World Champion Kenny Belaey (Monty) who led the dance… and what a dance it was! He took the Champion’s jersey after an excellent three laps that saw him concede just two points on his first lap. The incumbent champion Gilles Coustellier (Koxx) made some big mistakes on his first lap, relegating himself to third place, despite a fantastic second lap of zero. Vincent Hermance (Koxx) managed his lead perfectly to take a well-deserved silver medal. Giacomo Coustellier (Koxx) finished in fourth place, a few points away from the podium. Hungary’s Laszlo Hegedus (Koxx) confirmed Saturday’s performance and hung on to his fifth place in the final, ahead of Germany’s Hannes Hermann (Atomz), Belgian Iciar Van den Bergh (Koxx) Frenchman Nicolas Vuillermot (TMS).

JPEG - 244.5 kb There were more surprises in store in the 20” final in Biella! Dani Comas (Monty), who had seemed on poor form in Friday’s competition, claimed back the European title from Benito Ros. He put in the best first lap of the whole competition, putting him ahead of Benito and the young pretender Abel Mustieles, with the two Koxx riders being separated on most cleans, in favour of the World Champion. Rick Koekoek finished in fourth place, ahead of Junior World Champion Ion Areitio (Koxx) and Théau Courtès (Ozonys). Carles Diaz (Atomz) and Paolo Patrizi (Monty) finished in seventh and eigth place respectively.
