The international trials community heard the sad news in Brezova last week; Javi Alonso gave a short speech paying homage to a trials rider who sadly died on the 19th June 2010. Gavin Bedford, from Porthcawl, was a friendly and universally-liked rider with a rare enthusiasm for the sport. The sad news was broken on the UK’s Trials-Forum, where he was well-known and admired: R.i.p. Gavin Bedford. A member of Team Ashton/Diamondback, Gavin was a rider very much of the old school, a good friend of Martyn Ashton’s and was also a passionate surfer and mountain biker. He died following a tragic accident at work in which some pipes are reported to have fallen and struck him on the head. He was rushed to hospital, where he died a few days later.
The funeral was held in Porthcawl on Wednesday 30th June at the All Saint’s Church and Gavin was buried in the Jubilee Gardens cemetery. There were numerous trials riders and surfers in attendance. Gavin had a lively, laid-back character and attendees were asked to come not in the traditional dark clothing, but in their everyday clothes – jeans and trainers, shorts and flip-flops – just as Gavin would have wanted it. It was a very moving funeral by all accounts and many of Gavin’s friends spoke of Gavin and his joie-de-vivre and love for the rocks at Porthcawl. So long Gav, Ride in Peace.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends.
The teaser for a video of Gav, published online a few months ago; the full video was expected this summer…
