The UCI season got underway this weekend in Catalonia: like last year, the World Cup opened in Ripoll in the Pyrenees. And history repeated itself in the Catalan mountains with Gilles Coustellier and Dani Comas taking the top spots in Elite and Karin Moor winning the women’s competition. The sections were artificial, mixing rocks, wood and concrete. All weekend you were able to follow the action live on the UCI website and now its time to bring you the results and reports in more detail, with media brought to you by Ripoll’s No.1 media site, ElRipollès.info! First up was the women’s final, which took place on the Friday and was won by a seemingly unstoppable Karin Moor...
The women’s final:
The women’s final began at 10:30 on Friday and ran until 14:15. Current Vice-Champion Gema Abant Condal started very strongly and was ahead after the first lap, while favourite Karin Moor had ha d a catastrophic lap with 20 points on her card. However, the Swiss rider pulled herself together and put in an excellent second lap which she finished with just five points. She went on to finish her third lap with just one point, which allowed her to close the gap between her and the Spaniard, taking the win on most cleans! The eight time World Champion could well be on her way to adding her seventh consecutive World Cup to her trophy cabinet. She’ll have to work hard for it though; Gema is also on top form, with her winter training obviously paying off and ensuring that the battle for the top spot will be a tough one this year! Third place went once again to Mireia Abant Condal (41 points), with Polish rider Sonia Klich in fourth with 54 and Slovak Tatiana Janickova in fifth on 57.
