K-124 Days 2009, Street Session

K-124 Days 2009 was one of the most testing and passionate competitions ever organised. For those of you who couldn’t make it, Tribal Zine covered the whole weekend, bringing you the first photos of the new 26" Sky Range (Koxx Sky 26" 2009) on Friday evening, followed by the complete results and a best-of gallery the day after the competition (K-124 Days 2009 - Day 1 & K-124 Days 2009 Final).

In fact, it was sort of on purpose - our photos aren’t very high quality (it’s not easy shooting at night!), and we were waiting for some better ones to appear online before posting the article. Unfortunately, so far nothing has surfaced, so here’s a write-up of the whole evening with the few photos that we managed to take and a few video screenshots. It was a great evening, despite the absence of the K-124 Days street sessions star, Vincent Hermance.

Anyway, more of that later! Let’s start at the beginning... We arrived at the K-124 House in Paris at about 17.00. It’s not too hard to find, unlike parking places in the neighbourhood! Ah Paris! Once we’d parked up, we went inside.

It’s a really big shop, and very modern inside! It’s almost like walking into a trendy bar! The workshop is behind a counter, which only furthers this impression. To one side there is a comfortable lounge area with bike videos playing on a large flat screen. It was cool to see Benito Ros sitting in their, chatting away with some other riders. Max, who runs the shop, comes over to greet us. He’s a really nice guy, really passionate about what he does, and welcomes us with open arms. What we wanted to do was to take some photos of the shop and the riders and put them straight up here. Max gave us an exclusive look at the entire new Sky range, introducing us to Dominique Hermance at the same time, and showing us where to connect to the internet. In no time at all, the Sky bikes are online at Tribal Zine: (Koxx Sky 26" 2009)

At about 7pm, the atmosphere starts hotting up. More and more riders are gathering outside the shop, and we were all wondering who was going to lead the street session in the absence of Vincent Hermance (who had been invited to the Chalon Indoor in Champagne). Never fear, there were plenty of riders ready to take the helm; there were Germans (Hannes Hermann, Matthias Mhros, Markus Berthold, etc), Polish (Rafal Kumorowski), English riders from Tartybikes, Italians from Acroland (Francesco Policante), Romanians (with our Bogdan among them) and Hungarians (Hegedus Lazlo) all raring to go! And of course, Benito Ros, who knows the route well, to take point! Suddenly, a Red Bull car pulls up in Rue Pierre Dupont, and the charming Red Bull girls with their free cans cause the pressure to mount even more! Unfortunately the police turn up within two minutes to demand that the girls go and park somewhere else. The girls bat their eyelashes at the officers and the situation is calmed, giving them time to nip into the shop and hand out a few more free cans.

A big thanks to Red Bull, for helping us to continue long into the night and to be able to ride the next day in Buthiers woods!

But let’s get back to the Street Session... Once everyone had finished their Red Bull, they were off! It was an impressive convoy that set off for the first spot - The Jemmapes skate park, the sound of squealing maguras rang out in the streets of Paris!

JPEG - 135.7 kb JPEG - 119.5 kb JPEG - 129.9 kb JPEG - 133.2 kb

We hopped into our car and went straight to the next spot, the Gare de Lyon, where the riders would head next, and where the best riding spots were.

JPEG - 57.8 kb

We just had time to eat out kebabs and chips before the maguras could be heard approaching in the distance. The riders swarmed onto the square and started eyeing up the big walls and steps.

JPEG - 51.3 kb

Benito went for the big sidehop straight away. He dabs up it on his first attempt, but not a bad start! He moves on to some big gaps and hooks, and everyone follows. The Germans were riding superbly Matthias Mhros was hitting some big lines on his blue Hoffman. Hegedus was also standing out from the crowd with some big moves. It was really cool to see all of these great riders pushing themselves like this, but with such a relaxed atmosphere.

Benito came back to the big sidehop, eyed it up for a moment and then hopped straight to the top, brilliant!

Hegedus with a big hook...

And a sidehop...

In the end, Benito sets everyone straight with a massive hook (easily 2m!), on the highest wall in the square. He pulled it up to back wheel and the whole square erupted with shouts of encouragement and disbelief!

One last jump before heading back to the shop...

When we arrived back at the shop there was a buffet waiting for us, and we were treated to an incredible flatland demo by Matthias Dandois. It was the first time that we’d seen him in action, and it was unbelievable! He was linking tricks and rotations together at an incredible speed, and even managed to synchronise his riding with the beats supplied by DJ Tyler Durden, what a master! And if we thought that was good, we couldn’t wait to see him the next day in the bigger hall at Buthiers, it was going to be crazy!

JPEG - 59.9 kb JPEG - 62 kb JPEG - 55.8 kb

There were also some unicycle demos on the go, which culminated in a high jump contest. Then, to top it all off, Djey, a Clermont-Ferrand K-124 Shop rider, announces that he’s going to drop once more from the first level of the shop to the ground floor, a good 4.5m (see his last effort in the article News from the K-124 shop in Paris)! He takes a moment to psyche himself up as the DJ mounts the tension from his decks. Djey performs a little demo on the first floor...

and then launches himself off the edge!

Then we all head off for the Base de Loisirs de Buthiers. It was nearly half past midnight and it would take us about an hour to get there. When we arrived, we set up camp, grabbed a few beers and headed off to see who was around. The evening would end at the campsite with some party-loving unicyclists at around 5am. We won’t go into the details of the story, but suffice to say it was the start of an unforgettable weekend!

So that’s it for the street ride for another year. We apologise for the quality of the photos! If anyone has any better quality shots, please don’t hesitate to send them in to us at Tribal Mail and we’ll add them to the article, with a little mention of the photographer. There’s still more to come from this incredible weekend, with THE official video, filmed in HD using three cameras (Marcus Gelhard, Nicolas Ollier and Nicolas Marsac) and steady-cam equipment, which will bring together all of the highlights of the weekend (see the article K-124 Days teaser by Tribal Zine). It will also include an exclusive interview with Gilles Coustellier, which was taken between the two rounds of the closely-fought competition, and we’ve still got loads of photos to show you!
