The 2012 UCI Trials World Cup gets under way in two weeks in Belgium in multiple World Champion Kenny Belaey’s home town of Aalter. The organisation of the event was all finalised on Wednesday and the opening round, which will launch the new World Cup format, with the new “Super Final”, has been called by Kenny Belaey “the most mediatised in the history of trials”, with huge international coverage, including TV!
The competition is sure to be more intense than ever, particularly as the cards have been reshuffled considerably this year. In 26”, last year’s winner Vincent Hermance has moved to 20”, meaning that the fight for the top spot will be between World Champion Gilles Coustellier (who showed his excellent form at K-124 Days), Kenny Belaey and Giacomo Coustellier, who had a very strong start to the 2011 season. Behind them, the rest of the pack will be pitched in a close battle for a spot on the Final and the Super Final, with Hannes Hermann, Guillaume Dunand, Aurélien Fontenoy, Iciar Van den Bergh, Nicolas Vuillermot and more all vying for the podium. In the Junior category, Pierre-Charles Thomas will be riding on home turf, but will have to contend with the super-talented Jack Carthy, who will be making his first World Cup appearance, with the highest of ambitions.
in 20”, Benito Ros, who didn’t ride at K-124 Days due to a knee injury, has been saving himself for the first UCI fixture of the year, will almost certainly not have to worry about his protégé Abel Mustieles taking his crown – the young Spaniard injured his hand in training and was recently operated on – and his long standing adversary Dani Comas has quit the UVI to focus on the BIU season. He won’t have it all easy though, Rick Koekoek will be keen to take advantage of the absence of the two Spaniards, and Vincent Hermance is looking to make waves in the category - not to mention the young and super-motivated riders keen to make a name for themselves, like Ion Areitio, Théau Courtès or Loris Braun. In Femina, will there be anyone who can stand in the way of Spain’s Gemma Abant Condal in her quest for another victory?
Mark the date in your diaries, this is sure to be a spectacular and intense competition, and with plenty of entertainment planned as well (speed trial contest with a €1,000 prize pot, Red Bull Djs and concerts) there is plenty going on outside the competition! For those of you that can’t make it, Tribal Zine are media partners of the event and will be covering the event live from Aalter.
