Tyke Trial kicked off their 2012 season on Sunday 4th March with a wet and windy trial at Shipley Glen. Despite the less-than-favourable weather, there was a good turnout, with 53 riders in attendance. The trial got under way at 10:30, with riders spreading out over the eight sections which had been set along the top of the glen and in the woods. With Jack Carthy not in attendance in the morning, it seemed that the Elite class had been left open, and Tribal Riders Dave Kerr and Steve Rogers and 3SIXTY rider Brett Penfold seemed pretty evenly matched as they battled it out for the top spot. Brett just had the edge though, riding consistently in the rain on his Onza Genesis to finish on 24. Dave wasn’t far behind though, on 28, with his competition experience and love of bad weather shining through, while Steve-o was sitting comfortably in third place on 48. Tribal/3SIXTY Rider Jamie Bew, a relative newcomer to the Elite class, was riding valiantly but was a little off the pace, and 3SIXTY’s Alec Wray was forced to retire after his first lap, although he claims it wasn’t anything to do with his unusual choice of footwear! JPEG - 729.7 kb Tom Astbury brought up the rear, although he took home the unofficial ‘best dab award’! Brett was cruelly deprived of the gold medal at the last minute however, as Jack Carthy arrived at 2pm, racing round the sections to finish at 3pm on just six points and snatch the victory from Brett’s hands, relegating him to second place, with Dave in third.

In Expert Owen Gawthorpe, who has returned from injury after suffering a broken ankle at the end of last season, took the victory with 11 points, riding consistently well despite his recent injury. James Bancroft finished in second on 17, with Jed Hesling in third on 32.

JPEG - 464.5 kb Cadet class was an interesting one to watch, with the new 50/50 rules in place (borrowed from motorbike trials, with riders having to ride four intermediate sections and four expert sections). Adam Morewood, in his first season in Cadet, took the win on just nine points, an impressive victory from the BIU Poussin World Champion! UCI Poussin World Champion and Tribal Rider Charlie Rolls was in second on 15, with TJ Reynoldson in third on 21. Interestingly, it was an Intermediate section that took the most points from the riders.

With the world champions and other top-of-the-table riders having moved up to Cadet class, Intermediate was left a little more open, allowing newcomer Sam Iveson to take the victory, finishing on 28. Not far behind him was the only lady rider in the field, Donna Fox, on 32. She later claimed that it was Tribal Zine’s Ben Swales’ fault for taking photos of her and causing her to pick up ‘an unnecessary five’. A scurrilous and unfounded accusation, we can assure you! Third place went to Jordan Seymour who finished on 41.

Harry Francis took the win in Novice class with 12 dabs, followed by Jack Iveson on 25 and Reece Seymour on 29. In Primary class, the victory went to Max Milnes on 26, with Jack and Billy Anderson in second and third on 57 and 59 respectively.
