A bike with no seat and a rider with no boundaries. That’s all you need to have fun at a quarry.
Norway’s first official Biketrial competition was held on the moonlike landscape of rocks near Bjørke on the 30th June. Those that went along were treated to a spectacle of bike mastery and balance in glorious conditions. Organiser and Elite winner Eirik Ulltang tells us about the day:
Norway’s first official competition
A Biketrial can be held anywhere, in a city structure or out in a quarry like today. Sections are set, and the riders have a certain amount of time to go through the different sections, trying to balance on one or both wheels without touching the ground with anything but their tyres. Though unofficial competitions have been arranged before, today was the first official Norwegian competition with all the participants certified by the Norwegian Cycling Association.
As the clerk of course, I, and Joachim Skjævestad, the safety officer, were both satisfied with the big day. As Joachim said after the trial, “No injuries and a good crowd, that’s a success.”
Photographers didn’t want to let me go after the competition, but rather do some extra tricks for the cameras. Not only was I in charge of the competition, but I was also today’s winner, and one of the main athletes within the sport in Norway.
I got my first real trials bike in 2004. I started doing riding in 2000, but back then I had to saw off the seats!
And for the record, any suspicions of the results being fixed can be dispelled; I didn’t set any of the sections!
