Portuguese trials now has an online face, www.trialportugal.net, a quality website which covers all aspects of Portuguese trials: news, results, videos, etc. and which is key to the organisation of the new Portugese Trials Cup. Over the last few years, trials has really taken off in Portugal. Until recently it was run to BIU rules, but 2009 marks a turning point in the development of the discipline. In effect, after a period during which the sport did not really enjoy any recognition, trials is coming to the fore and is now affiliated with the Portuguese Cycling Federation (Federação Portuguesa de Ciclismo) and with the UCI (and their rules).
It is within this new framework that the first ever Portuguese Trials Cup, a national competition that is also open to foreign riders, is organised, the first round of which took place on the 19th of April in the village of Terras de Bouro. It was dominated by Portuguese Champion João Sousa, who we featured in a recent article (Interview with João Sousa), and who therefore takes the lead in the series. Trialportugal.net have sent us this write-up and the results of the competition.
Write-up:
The sun shone for João Sousa in Braga!
On Sunday the 19th of April the Braga trials park played host to the second round of the Portuguese Biketrials Cup. It was a lovely day, notably so for João Sousa, who took the win.
This round saw an exceptional turnout of Spanish athletes, who had come from Salamanca.
In Elite, João Sousa, who had been following an intensive training programme, gave few chances to his adversaries with a nearly perfect competition. Spanish rider Ivan Izquierdo came second, ahead of Daniel Sousa.
"The Braga round is one of my favourites, as there are a lot of big ups and gaps. I took the lead after the second section of my first lap and kept it right until the end. I finished on four points, which I had planned before the competition started, so I was happy not to have made any extra mistakes. A big thanks to all my sponsors and supporters", said João Sousa after the competition.
As for Daniel Sousa, who won the first round, he admitted to having made several mistakes, "but João Sousa’s level left very little chance for anyone else".
«The fight with Ivan Izquierdo for second place was tough, he put in a fantastic performance and I ended up finishing third. I hope to improve on that in Coimbra", added Daniel Sousa.
The next round of the Cup took place this weekend on Saturday the 9th of May, in the Parc Vert de Mondego, right in the centre of Coimbra... watch this space for more info!
