The title Champion of Spain, awarded by the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation, which is affiliated with the UCI, was decided over a series of three rounds. The last of these took place two weeks ago in Pedro Bernardo (Avila), over some particularly long and technical sections set out by the Zona Centro cycling club, made even more difficult by the intense heat (over 35°!). Sunday’s competition was a bit easier than Saturday’s thanks to some more agreeable weather and some riders managed to get through some of the tough sections on cleans, something that had not been possible the day before.
Benito Ros won the third round but had to give up his jersey (that he had been wearing for five years!) to Catalonia’s Dani Comas, his biggest rival of the season. Second place in this third round was all that Dani needed to ensure that the jersey was his. This new development is sure to mean a more intense battle between the two riders at the next round of the World Cup that takes place in France in Saint-François Longchamp. Abel Mustieles Garcia, Junior World Champion, took up the third spot on the podium in his first national Elite season. Unsurprising given the great start to the season that he has had, winning the K-124 Days 2009 Elite competition and finishing in sixth place in Heubach (he was in third position in the semi-final)! The title of Junior Spanish Champion went once again to Areitio Agirre Ion, who won all three rounds of the seris! THis rider, who is just 16 years old, is already riding in the World Cup: in Heubach->art1012], he qualified for the semi-final and finished in sixteenth place! The awards ceremony took place with the president of the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation Juan Carlos Castano in attendance.
