A brief intorduction for those of you who don’t know Chris (where have you been?)... He’s a 30 year old bike fanatic who has competed in trials competition at the highest level (six times British champ, Red Bull Bike Battle winner and a distinguished International career). Currently sponsored by Mongoose, Aire Valley Cycles & Hope, Chris is at home on any surface, natural or street and excels at both. He’s dedicated himself to making videos now, working on both sides of the camera, and regularly posts some excellent productions on his blog at www.chrisakrigg.com.
He has recently released a series of videos that rocked the trials world: He was riding an old school looking Mongoose, stripped of all but the bare essentials... including the brakes (Chris Akrigg... brakeless!, Day at the SeaSide->art768])! This didn’t stop him from pulling moves and rising sections that most trials riders would have struggled with even with their brakes on!
This extraordinary rider, who many have called a genius, is continuing his "experimental" period, and brought out last month another remarkable video, riding street and trials on a fixie! Fixie’s have become the latest fashion trend among cyclists, having appeared a few years ago in the States and more recently in Europe. They are basically bikes with fixed gears and very often no brakes, and "old school" geometry and thin tyres. It’s impossible to stop pedalling while the bike is moving, with purists removing their brakes and stopping by using their pedals, either slowing the rotation or by locking them up to pull impressive skids! Have a look at what Chris is capable of behind the handlebars of such a bike... it’s staggering!
