Following Tribal Zine’s interview with Kenny Belaey last week, in which he announced that he was currently working on a new frame with Monty but that they would be parting company at the end of the year, a few questions came to mind.
To answer them, Tribalzine, in collaboration with Trials-riders.es, got in touch with Ot Pi (Director General of Monty Bikes) for an exclusive interview in which he explained the World Champion’s departure and left a question mark over the future of the brand’s 20” bikes.
Interview:
1.-Hi Ot. Thanks you for your time, I know you’re a busy man. Let’s start by talking about competitions; Monty are Euorpean Champions in 20” and 26”, with Dani and Kenny getting good results in the World Cup. What does it mean to Monty to have won, in both categories, a title that had escaped them for a while, especially in 26”?
Ot: It’s amazing. Just like the first time we won anything. The input that our riders bring to our products is very important, and that translates into results.
We have to offer a product with a minimum amount of reliability and warranty, which many companies do not do. This will continue to be our policy.
2.-Kenny Belaey has announced that he will be moving to GT for 2012. Was his time with Monty coming to an end anyway? What are the reasons for the move?
Ot: Kenny is a great rider, possibly the most committed ever. It became clear that we couldn’t keep him hold of him if his ambition was to break America.
3.-We’ve seen Kenny in a GT advert already, riding a bike, but not a Monty. Is he still linked with your brand until 2012? If so, how come he’s advertising another company?
Ot: As GT do not currently have a trials bike, and I doubt that they will in the future, we came to an agreement since we are not currently in competition.
4.-With Kenny leaving, you will be losing your 26” standard bearer. Who will ‘fill the gap’? Is there a rider who will be joining Monty on a 26” in the future?
Ot: At the moment, no, there won’t be a replacement.
5.-Kenny mentioned in another interview that he is developing a new 26”, which he is currently using in competition. Can you tell us anything about it?
Ot: Although it may not always seem that way, monty have not stopped developing our products. However, product reliability is paramount; we need to ensure that no-one breaks a frame after very little use. We’re looking for the balance between low weight and strength and will soon be bringing out some higher quality products.
6.-Will the 20” models be undergoing any changes as well? Is Dani’s bike a prototype? If so, what are you hoping to improve and what geometry will it have?
Ot: That would be telling.
7.- OK! Well, thanks for your time, and good luck with your projects and in the remaining competitions of the season!
Ot: Thanks!
